The ceremony kicked off with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran followed by a speech by Qadi Saeed Al Mroshid, Director General of the Deparment of Health and Medical Services.

"The World Elderly Day is the day to tell the elderly that we really cherish the time we spend with them and the significant role they played in our life. On their special day, we feel the responsibility and obligation to repay them by treating them well and to let them know that they are always in our heart. It is a great pleasure for me to be one among millions who owe their gratitude and appreciation to the elderly who contributed through their hard work and devotion to bringing prosperity and development to their country," Mr Al Mroshid said.

"As senior citizens are considered the most important members of any society, they deserve good care and treatment. The President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and His Highness Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, have issued instructions to provide the elders with the best social and health facilities. Those instructions materialised through the establishment of various care centres for the elderly with the aim of catering to their needs and bringing a smile on their faces," Mr Al Mroshid said.

He pointed to the initiatives of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, who enhanced various facilities offered to elders, making a reference to Al Shuwab Rest Home which is equipped with the latest medical facilities and being looked after by experienced doctors and nurses.

Around 22 doctors, physiotherapists and nurses of Al Shuwab Rest Home were honoured for their services.
