The transplantations were uneventful and most patients were discharged after four to five days of the operation. In some cases, both donors and recipients were discharged at the same time.

Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) met with some of the patients and donors two daysafter the surgeries.

“The success of the multi-organ transplantation programme at SKMC is a source of great pride for SEHAand SKMC.

“It is evidence of our commitment to the continual improvement of healthcare delivery services in Abu Dhabiand the UAE.

“The continued expansion and ongoing success of the multi-organ transplantation programme is yet another significant step forward towards a healthcare system comparable to the best in the world,” Al Qubaisi said.

“With this programme in place, SKMC is able to treat transplant patients in the UAE rather than sending them abroad for treatment.

“As a result, we are not adding to their suffering by requiring them to be outside the country and away from family and the cultural support we have here, but also in increased convenience and comfort for them and their respective families in follow-up care,”Al Qubaisi added.

In addition to kidney transplant, SKMC is also offering corneal transplantation and plans to offer liver transplantation in the near future, according to Dr Atul Mehta, chief medicalofficer of SKMC.

“We also intend to expand our services to include pancreas, lung, and small bowel transplantation — thus providing state of the art transplantation care,” he said.
