Fish Waste Recycling Unit Soon in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI — A recycling plant for fish waste will be established in the capital soon. Abu Dhabi Fishermen Cooperative Society is setting up an unit to convert fish waste to fish meal, said an official of the society.

Ali Mohammed Mansour Al Mansoury said the plant will process waste that is normally dumped in deserts or deposited in garbage bins leading to environmental pollution.

“We are awaiting government approval to set up the plant,” Al Mansoury said, adding that the organisational structure of the Society is being revamped with greater emphasis on recycling fish.

The society will also lay emphasis on reducing the price of fish and changing the fishing methodology to further protect the marine environment.

“Our plan is to attract more people to eat fish which is more healthy and nutritious than meat which leads to obesity,” he said.

The Society is educating fishermen on the need to protect the marine environment and not throw plastic bags, bottles or cigarette butts into the sea, which harms the coral reef.
