Dherar Belhoul, Director-General of Watani programme, told Khaleej Times that there were rules and regulations which must be observed during the National Day period, and one of the most important aspects to respect was the way flags were displayed.

There was a fixed protocol on the correct way to display UAE flags, he said.

“Should the flag be placed, fixed, flown, held or carried horizontally, the red colour must be at the close end of the mast whereas the green shall be up, the white in the middle, and the black at the lower part.”

The UAE flag may be carried or fixed vertically, he said, but there were rules governing this too. “The red colour must be up whereas the green shall be to the right, the white in the middle, and the black to the left.”

Putting the flag down should also be done in a certain way. “The flag must be put down from the middle part of the mast,” he added. Belhoul urged all participants in the celebrations to keep the flag clean. “Never let the flag touch the ground, and kindly report any ripped or torn flag.”

As for measurements, the flag must be rectangular and the width twice the length. “The green, white and black colours must be horizontal, parallel, and similar in length and width...However, the width of the red colour must be equal to quarter of the flag length while the mast shall be three-fold the length of the flag,” Belhoul noted.
