The two-day meet yesterday brought together members of the AGCC Committee who will decide on unified strategic labelling and packaging of tobacco related products according to the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention for Tobacco Control.
A decision in this regard will be announced today.
Dr Wedad Maidoor, head of the UAE National Committee for Tobacco Control at the Ministry of Health, said that along with the other AGCC countries, the UAE, too, was considering making graphic warnings compulsory on packaged tobacco products.
To present case studies and share Canada’s experience by using graphics to give health warnings, Rob Cunningham, a lawyer for the Canadian Cancer Society said that graphics are cost effective and have a greater impact on youth.
