International flower fest opens in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI - The First Abu Dhabi International Flower Festival opened at the Cultural Foundation in the capital on Tuesday.

It was inaugurated by Dr Salem Al Masri Dhahiri, Director-General of the Federal Environmental Agency (FEA), accompanied by senior officials and dignitaries.

The festival organised under the auspices of the Federal Environmental Agency (FEA) and supported by the Environment Friends Society and the General Exhibitions Corporation (GEC), being organised as part of the country's celebrations of the Seventh National Environment Day, which kicked off nationwide on February 4. It will continue till February 23.

Flowers, roses, plants, trees, mixed bouquets, arranging flowers and roses, plant arrangement, gift wrapping, seeds, bulbs, fertilisers, garden tools, grower tools, grub tools, accessories, home decor (using flowers) and garden design from different countries are on show at the event. The opening ceremony included a folk show organised by the Yemeni Embassy in Abu Dhabi. A folk dance by a Yemeni troupe thrilled the audience. The ceremony also featured a host of recreational events and competitions held in cooperation with the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police.

The show continued on Wednesday with a number of activities in addition to different displays of flowers. These included an art show for kids at the festival's hall. A carnival was organised along the Corniche ending at the Breakwater. Today's programme includes an art show for kids, a folk show to be organised in cooperation with the Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. A competition for the `Most Beautiful Flower Bouquet' in which exhibitors will vie for an award.

Tomorrow, the show will feature an art show for kids, a folk show in cooperation with the Japanese Embassy in Abu Dhabi and a contest for engraving fruits in sculpted form to be organised in collaboration with a number of hoteliers. From February 21 to February 23, the show will feature arts shows, recreational shows in addition to flower displays by exhibitors.
