"By the end of this year, the tender procedure will be over for the project and actual work will start on widening the Al Ittihad Road," said Engineer Maitha Mohammad bin Adai, Chief Executive Officer, Traffic and Roads Agency, responding to people's demand of opening the Al Mamzar Road to ease traffic problems on the main arterial road.

She also said that RTA was continuously working on plans to reduce traffic congestion on roads. "People should take alternative routes so that congestion is lessened on roads," she said.

She added that no decision had been taken on imposition of road tolls. "Let us first be clear on the project, only then we will make a public announcement. Till now, no decision has been taken regarding this issue," she explained.

Meanwhile, RTA yesterday held a Press meet to announce the details regarding the second International Safety Conference on November 6 and 7 under the banner of “Road Safety without Borders”.

Maitha Mohammad said that the conference focuses on road safety which is among the main social issues.

“Road accidents in the Middle East are currently the ninth highest cause of death and they are anticipated to rise to third place by 2020. Every year in the UAE, road accidents cause hundreds of deaths,” said Dr Ghassan Daban, Managing Director of the Smart Vision Company, organiser of the conference.

Maitha Mohammad said that the conference will provide a stimulating programme to address critical issues relating to continued road safety advances and to investigate the importance of potential determinants of motor vehicle-related crashes and injuries among young drivers.

"The conference will also help in the development of a safer driving policy and implementation of a safer driving programme," she added.

Dr Aysha Al Busmait, Director of the Marketing and Corporate Communication Department, RTA, asked media organisations to take the initiative in guiding the young drivers through attractive programmes.
