It was celebration all around on Wednesday as Khaleej Times scooped two awards at the prestigious World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) Middle East Conference in Dubai.
During the Digital Media Awards 2019, Khaleej Times' popular WhatsApp news service received silver in the 'Best Digital News Startup' category. And taking silver in the 'Best Data Visualisation' category was KT's in-house 'Data Visualisation' service.
Bringing the news closer to you than ever before, KT started offering a free of cost WhatsApp service to its readers in July 2018. Since its launch, it has been a huge hit with users and continues to bring up-to-the-minute breaking news, views, trends and videos, daily.
Held in Dubai on the first day of the 14th edition of the conference, the awards bear testimony to the persistent efforts of Team KT in being at the forefront of not only offering the latest news and information to our audience, but also an innovative and creative platform to advertisers.
The awards recognise publishers who have adopted digital media and mobile strategies to meet the changes in how people consume news and information today.
Strong content quality, consistency in user experience and evidence of the publishing company's commitment to offering value to readers and advertisers, were all part of the stringent criteria employed by the WAN-IFRA judging panel to choose the winners.
Taking to the stage to award the winners, Alfonso De Gaetano, who leads the Google Publishers business across EMEA Emerging Markets, said he was "'impressed with all the projects put forward" and said it is working to empower more newsrooms and journalists in the region.
"This year, we will be launching news labs to improve journalists' digital skills. We are planning to train about 4,000 journalists in the Mena this year."
