DUBAI - The second of the three Main Power Supply (MPS) systems for the Dubai Metro located at Union Square was energised recently, the RTA said on Friday.
The MPS-2 has a maximum capacity of 160 MVA with dual step-down 132/33KV transformers. The MPS-2 is fully automated (unmanned) and equipped with advanced protection, fire fighting and monitoring systems.
The systems are currently under final testing phases for powering the Green Line network.
Adnan Al Hammadi, Rail Construction Director, RTA, said,” The electrically powered metro trial runs will continue during the next few months. MPS 1 and 2 together will provide the entire power supply for the metro operation including the rail stations for the Red Line serving the metro route of 52.1km from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali.”
“The design of the Dubai Metro power network is very reliable. In the unlikely event of total failure of any one MPS, the metro operations will not be affected on the entire rail network. Dubai Metro utilises the concept of braking power regeneration to help minimise power consumption from the DEWA grid, “he said.
“The power system is one of the major components in the Metro operation. Special emphasis was therefore placed to ensure a very reliable and failsafe system for the Dubai Metro. RTA continuously co-coordinated with DEWA to ensure the implementation of the power network in complete compliance with DEWA and international standards,” the official said.
The Metro Power system network will be fully monitored and controlled from dedicated Operations Control Centre (OCC) for all normal and emergency situations.
