The Dh10 billion Meydan City project is a mixed use development which will centre around the Meydan Racecourse that will host the prestigious Dubai World Cup — the most expensive in the world. The race, now into its 15th edition, is scheduled to be held in March next year.
Shaikh Mohammed began his tour of the project at the falcon-shaped parking area which, when completed, will be able to accommodate 10,000 cars. He then took a tour of the offices and the communication centre.
He also visited the to the five-star Al Medan hotel which is the first of its kind to be built at a racecourse. He inspected the hotel’s facilities and assessed its readiness to receive guest for the new racing season next year. The season opens with the seventh renewal of the Dubai International Racing Carnival, the highlight of which is the first round of the time-honoured Al Maktoum Challenge.
The inspection tour delegation included the Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, chairman of the Executive Board, Ahmad Abdulla Al Shaikh, Media escort to Shaikh Mohammed and vice-chairman of the Field and Melih Basti, board member of the Grandstand .
Shaikh Mohammed later examined the grass covering the land area and checked on its conformity to international standards and also the underground tunnels for the horses to come onto the track.
The suspended ceiling at the facility has been raised in the shape of a crescent decorated track and is topped with solar power modules producing about 750kw of electricity a day.
Shaikh Mohammed emphasised on the importance of Meydan City, asking for the minutest details to be looked into by the board and management committees.
He expressed his hope for Dubai and the UAE to welcome the guests with open arms and for the world to come together in every possible way during the festival.
The project cost has reached nearly Dh10 billion after the foundation stone was laid in June 2007.
The whole project is expected to be completed in 2012 and the first phase in March 2010 to coincide with the Dubai World Cup extravaganza.
