New desalination plant to meet Sharjah’s requirements

A large water desalination plant with a total capacity of 20 million gallons per day opened on Sunday at Al Hamriya at a total cost of Dh446 million.

Dr Rashid Obaid Jumaa Al Leem, Chairman of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) said the project is designed to meet the increasing demand for water in Sharjah city and the Hamriyah area. A project of Dh140 million for construction of deep sea water intake and pump house to feed the new plant has also been completed.

Al Leem pointed out that the execution of these vital projects comes in line with the instructions of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah, to keep pace with the on-going industrial, constructional and cultural boom witnessed in the Emirate. The projects reflect the emphasis placed by Shaikh Sultan on the infrastructure projects in the field of the electricity, water and natural gas and his attention to enhance the development in various fields.

Al Leem noted that the new plant is one of the strategic projects initiated by Sewa to achieve two main targets, the first to meet the water requirements of the industrial expansions by Hamriyah Free Zone Authority and Emirates Industrial City and the second to enable Sewa to provide water to all residents of Sharjah.

Al Leem added that Hamriya Station for Power Generation and Water Desalination was designed with a capacity of 2500 MW of electricity and 140 MIGD of water to meet the present and future requirements for power and water in Sharjah city. Once the on-going projects are completed, Hamriya power station will become a key station of Sewa for power generation and water production. Hamriya station has the infrastructure and facilities for new power and water projects to meet the future Sharjah demand for power and water.— afkar@khaleejtimes.com
