An RTA official said, “We have notified all relevant parties that all vehicles on sale in public areas will be towed away.”

He said this was part of the RTA’s efforts regarding the emirate’s beautification. “This provision will be observed during the implementation of Local Order Number 4/2001 issued in this regard.”

He added that all car owners planning to sell their vehicles have been asked to remove the cars from public areas and parking lots within a week.

Residents welcomed the move saying this would ensure more parking spaces in residential areas. Apart from being an eyesore, the vehicles block parking spaces, they say. “Most of the time, cars with stickers highlighting phone numbers of the owner are parked for months. This blocks a valuable parking space,” said M Khan of Karama.

“We have to hunt desperately for a free parking space. This step comes as a boon,” he added.
