With the Indian state of Kerala reeling under the impact of unprecedented floods, community associations in the Capital have decided not to celebrate Eid Al Adha and harvest festival of Onam
Community groups are the driving forces while hosting any events in the Capital but all members said that now it was time to express solidarity with the affected people and stand by them in the hour of crisis.
India Social and Cultural Centre (ISC) Abu Dhabi said the managing committee has decided not to host any celebrations. "We have cancelled our Eid celebrations of August 22 and Onam lunch of September 7. The ISC will be focusing on relief and rehabilitation work," ISC president Ramesh V. Panicker said.
Indian Islamic Centre (IIC), for the first-time ever, isn't hosting Eid and other celebrations. Karappath Usman, IIC general secretary, said: "Hundreds of lives are lost.
Everyone is affected in some way or the other. We are all shocked." Both Kerala Social Centre and Malayalee Samajam have cancelled all events. "Not just Eid and Onam but there are no events to be held at the centre this month. We are focusing fully on relief steps," KSC acting general secretary K. Venugopal said. Malayalee Samajam president T.A. Nasar said now no member can think of any festivities.
"The state is under water. How can anyone from the state think of celebrations," he asked.
