DUBAI – Lanfranco ‘Frankie’ Dettori won his second race of this prestigious Meydan meeting with victory in the re-run Dubai Gold Cup late on Saturday night.
Dettori rode Opinion Poll out in front in the closing stages and held on gamely as Joshua Tree (second) and Zanzamar (third) closed to within three-quarters of a length at the winning post, with the former separated from the latter by a short head.
This outing was scheduled to be the third race of the day, yet it was rescheduled after a nasty fall for Silvestre De Sousa’s runner Fox Hunt in the initial contest.
The repeat was not without incident either, with Bronze Cannon and Grand Vent both pulled up in-running to see a 12-strong field reduced down to 10. Dettori had earlier prevailed aboard African Story in the Godolphin Mile.
