Islamabad: The Khyber Pakhtunkha (KP) is the only government in Pakistan's history to launch campaign of growing forests, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan said on Saturday.
Reviewing the progress of billion-tree campaign initiated in the province, Imran told reporters in Haripur than already over 115 million trees have been grown. Till March 185 million trees would been grown with target of one billion till 2018.
He said the World Wildlife Fund has monitored the campaign and noted that 85 per cent of the planted trees have been conserved. The people have been involved in the campaign and paid personnel deployed to protect them.
Imran compared it with Punjab where, according to him, the timber mafia and official projects like metro train have led to destruction of trees.
In famous Chhanga Manga forest, 70,000 out of 75,000 have been cut.
Similarly forests in Mianwali and other places have disappeared.
