Policemen on horseback patrolling the streets of Abu Dhabi have made a strong comeback after a decade's gap, helping deal with around 20,000 cases last year alone.
The patrols of mounted police began in the Capital back in 1974, however, the force was withdrawn in 2006. In July 2016, the mounted policemen returned to duty under the Special Tasks Department of the Guards and Special Tasks General Directorate.
The Abu Dhabi Police told Khaleej Times, the mission of the mounted policemen is to serve the security system in the emirate, while enhancing the sense of safety within the community.
"The mounted policemen have dealt with 20,000 cases in Abu Dhabi last year. The horseback patrols are not only helping fight against crime, but they are communicating and reaching out to the members of the community, by helping deal with the concerns and complaints of the people."
Major Khalid Al Hamli, deputy general supervisor of the mounted policemen, said helping manage 20,000 cases last year alone indicates the achievements of the patrols, while also reflecting on the police's efforts to distinguish its services, as well as the adoption of initiatives that contribute to the enhancement of police strategies.
"There is a continuous search for improvement opportunities and promoting community satisfaction."
He pointed out that policemen on horses roaming the streets of Abu Dhabi also raises the sense of security among the general public. Major Al Hamli said the mounted patrols also have a high presence in major landmarks, sport stadiums, festivals and concerts in Abu Dhabi.
The patrols will also be present at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque during Eid prayers this weekend.
"Their presence can be felt in functions and events, where they swiftly deal with issues or suspects, and respond to cases promptly within police procedures."
Major Al Hamli said the public should not hesitate to ask for help from the mounted police patrols when needed.
Last year, the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police told Khaleej Times the horseback police are equipped with modern arrangements that allows them to quickly deal with issues faced by community members in the emirate.
A total of 300 policemen, as well as their horses, are provided with excellent training.
During the trial of the comeback, 60 of the policemen were patrolling Abu Dhabi City, while the rest were deployed in Al Ain and in the Western Region.
He stressed that this effective way of patrolling "enhances police presence in the public, and provides the community with a sense of confidence".
