DUBAI — The Court of First Instance sentenced on Wednesday a Syrian man, in his seventies, to six months in jail for possession of seven counterfeit $100 bills, which he tried to circulate at a money exchange office.
The police received a complaint on April 4 from a money exchange office against a resident possessing fake currency.
“He (the defendant) wanted to convert US currency into dirhams. He had eight $100 bills which were all fake but for one,” a staff alleged.
The money exchange staff said they could tell that the bills were counterfeit after touching them.
“Seven bills had the same serial numbers. I knew they were forged by scanning,” the witness claimed.
He also said that the Syrian alleged that he had got the money from another exchange office in a shopping centre.
“I asked him to wait a little and to give me his ID card, But he refused and became nervous,” the witness added.
When the Syrian walked out in a hurry from the exchange office the witness followed him and wrote down his car’s number.
The police was called and they seized the fake currency from him.
