The initial qualifying tests of the ‘Most Beautiful Quran Recitation’ began on Tuesday in Dubai.

Head of the organising committee, Ibrahim Bu Melha, who is also adviser to the Ruler of Dubai for Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs, said the five-category competition is part of the 11-category Dubai International Holy Quran Award.
“The contest, aimed to discover, sponsor and qualify Quran talents and melodious voices, shall see 432 contests in all categories this year.”
Children aged 15 or below may participate in the first category, ‘Quran Buds’; while the second, ‘Quran Youngsters’, is open to those between 15 and 25 years. The third category, ‘Quran Youth’, is open to those 26 years old and above, he added.
“There are two further categories; one for imams and one for the most tuneful azan (call for prayer).”
Bu Melha said Dubai competitors shall be tested from May 10 to 12, those from Sharjah on May 13, contestants from Fujairah and RAK on May 14 and Abu Dhabi and Al Ain on May 15. May 16 will see the selection of the most tuneful azan from across the country.
The final tests will be held from May 17 for five days.
“Participation is open to the public, be they Emiratis or expatriates, provided they perform well.”
Application forms are available online at the Dubai International Holy Quran Award website, or can be collected from the award head office in Al Twar shopping centre of Al Qusais area-2 from 8.30am to 1pm, and from 5pm to 8.30pm, Saturdays to Wednesdays.
