“According to a study conducted by the Department of Community Medicine, UAE University, Al Ain, road accidents claim the lives of more than 300 children, aged 14 and below, in the UAE annually,” said Saif Ahmed Belhasa, Chairman of the BDC.
“This campaign is aimed at educating children about road safety. As part of our campaign, we'll distribute books on road safety among children. They will be informed about the dangers of overspeeding. The books are colourful and contain puzzles to make learning about road safety a fun activity for them,” he said.
The month-long programme supports the Ministry of Education's initiative to introduce road safety and traffic awareness as subjects to be studied in all private and public schools.
The campaign, sponsored by UHU, is expected to reach out to 50,000 children. Experts from the BDC will visit 30 schools in the UAE to teach children basic traffic rules.
“Statistics show that 636 accidents have been recorded in Dubai last year, killing several people. With an objective of maximising road safety and reducing accidents, the RTA has been involved in various initiatives to spread awareness about the dangers of rash driving and to underline the importance of following traffic rules,” said Al Moatasem Belah M, Traffic Awareness Manager, Traffic Department, RTA.
