Scandal ends as MoEy accepts teachers’ resignations

ABU DHABI - The month-long scandal over the mass termination of nearly 30 teachers of the Islamiya English School that was first reported in Khaleej Times has ended with the Ministry of Education and Youth (MoEY) formally accepting the resignation letters of the teachers, and the school fulfilling all the legal and financial obligations - paying the teachers their due salaries and end of service benefits.

The teachers, who alleged that the school management had threatened them with dismissals and forced them to tender resignations, approached the ministry to intervene in the matter.

But the ministry, on the other hand, had asked the teachers to first withdraw their resignations and then file a complaint.

None of the teachers, however, did that. They insisted that the authorities should take action as the Press had already brought out the issue. They were reluctant seemingly for fear of loosing their money or inviting a ban on their passport.

The principal of the school had given an official statement earlier this week defending the school's stand in asking the teachers to resign.

According to him, the teachers were "incompetent and insubordinate", and there were numerous complaints against them both from the parents and other teachers.

However, there is still one teacher left who has not submitted his resignation to the principal. According to him, the school authorities are planning to prepare his termination letter.

As per the existing laws, schools have to get the prior permission of the Ministry and the Education Zone before they could terminate the services of any of their teachers.
