Passengers, around two weeks back, had to pay Dh15 instead of Dh10 to take a public bus from Sharjah Airport to Rashidiya Metro Station, according to informed sources with Sharjah Transport.

However, a trip back from Rashidiya to Sharjah Airport still costs Dh10.

“The rising operation costs have made the hike indispensable to provide a more convenient and developed service,” the sources said.

“The fare, however, remains very competitive as opposed to taxi tariff which starts at Dh20 from the airport, in addition to extra Dh20 for inter-emirate trips, let alone the charge collected against the distance covered.”

The shuttle service launched on March 2 in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Department and KGL Franchise Company is available from 6am to 10.30pm on an hourly basis.

The 20km bus route, which offers 16 daily trips, was launched after an intensive field study in response to the pressing demand from the public.

“It has been noticed that many of Sharjah Airport passengers and visitors take two rides from the Sharjah Airport to Jubail bus station, and then to Dubai, which costs them double fare, time and effort,” said Adel Khalil, Sharjah Intercity Transport Manager, adding that daily trips are increased and intervals are decreased during weekends and holidays. Passengers may also carry as many bags as they wish, and they need not pay extra money for their luggage,” Khalil said, noting that Air Arabia is developing passengers’ awareness about the service at the airport. —ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
