Sharp drop in complaints of work-related accidents

ABU DHABI - Labour complaints about work-related accidents registered a sharp decline in the country, with only 30 complaints filed with the authorities over the last seven months relating to occupational hazards.

Out of the total 9,900 complaints of 13,891 different causes that were registered with labour offices across the country, only 4 were over accidents caused by occupational hazards in the emirate of Abu Dhabi out of 3,453 complaints of various other nature.

According to a recent statistical report of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, two complaints were registered over the past seven months regarding work-related accidents in Al Ain city out of 1,337 other causes.

In Dubai, the total number of complaints pertaining to occupational hazards was 14 out of 5,839 different cases, according to the report.

Labour complaints lodged with Sharjah Labour Office during the same period were 1,440 of 1,742 various nature with disputes over work-related accidents registering only two cases.

In Ras Al Khaimah, out of a total 491 complaints pertaining to 521 different causes, three complaints pertained to occupational hazard accidents, the report said.

It said two complaints in Fujairah out of 215 reported labour disputes pertained to accidents resulting from exposure of labourers to different work hazards, while in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain, three cases of occupational hazard injuries were registered out of a total of 57 disputes of 85 different causes.

Meanwhile, the report mentioned 4371 employees had their visas cancelled and slapped with deportation orders.

The deported labourers included 3,034 employees from Dubai, 1110 from Sharjah, 192 from Ras Al Khamiah and 35 from Umm Al Quwain.

According to statistics, 393 causes of complaints filed in the country over the past seven months were about temporary work permits where workers sought authorities to help secure alternate sources of living in the event of labour disputes with their sponsors.
