On 'International Yoga Day', hosted by the Indian Consulate at the World Trade Centre, Khaleej Times got a chance to explore the variety of yoga schools and styles being practised in Dubai.
Mindful experiments and innovation has taken this disciplined form of exercise to another level altogether. Apart from Hatha Yoga (basic form), the most popular styles of Yoga in Dubai are Power Yoga, Hot or Bikram Yoga and Sahaj Yoga.
Anurag Bhushan, Indian Consul-General in Dubai believes the different forms give flexibility to people to choose a style which suits them.
Choose your 'Yoga' style
Power Yoga
An intense aerobic workout, this is a combination of gymnastic exercises and ancient yoga philosophy. It tones the body perfectly, promotes blood circulation and boosts the immune system. Based on Ashtanga yoga, it incorporates stretching (push-ups, toe touches, side bends), strength training and meditative breathing.
Hot/Bikram Yoga
It is performed under hot or humid a condition which leads to heavy sweating. This style is commonly associated with Bikram Choudhury, a gold medal Olympic weight lifter from India. It is practised in a heated room and is the best way to detoxify the body. It helps in cleansing the body and weight loss.
Sahaj Yoga/ Meditation
This is the ultimate way to take a break from the hustle-bustle of life and to get a peaceful state of mind. It helps in releasing stress, tension and anxiety.
Pierre Ravan, who gives meditation lessons In Dubai is a DJ, an international musician and a businessman. He explains: "Meditation is being with oneself. Spirituality is not against joy and I want to give this message to the youth that you can do parties in a healthy way too. Meditation doesn't mean one has to go to any secluded place to practise it. It can be followed anywhere and everywhere in the world."
