This was announced by the Traffic and Roads Agency in Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The closure of the road is part of the Dh800mn expansion project which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008.

According to RTA officials, while the diversion from Dubai towards Sharjah took effect yesterday, traffic from Sharjah towards Dubai will be diverted by June-end.

The officials have asked motorists to maintain the traffic flow by using the temporary diversions until the end of the project in October 2008.

“All motorists are requested to follow the guiding boards, abide by the specified speed limits and use alternative roads,” said the officials.

Motorists using the route can use two diversions starting from the traffic lights. Those going to Abu Hail can turn left towards Abu Hail and Salahuddin Road before the police headquarters. Those heading for Sharjah should turn right towards Al Quds Roads and take a detour behind the police headquarter and join Al Nahda Road and finally back to Al Ittihad Road.

Meanwhile, motorists using the diversion yesterday said the traffic flow was smooth. “I think it is a weekend and not many people are using the road. Therefore, there is not much of a problem, but I am not sure of the situation on a normal working day,” said a motorist.
