The Riyadh-based Bidaya TV channel has been shut down after one of its presenters informed a participant about his father's death even as the programme was being aired.
The Ministry of Culture and Information in Saudi Arabia has stopped all broadcasts of the channel, according to a report in Okaz.
The General Authority for Audiovisual Media has instituted an investigation into the matter. Legal authorities have also been notified.
The contestant, Ibrahim Al Awwad, was told about his father's death by the presenter without apparently taking a nod from the management.
The management of the TV channel has taken firm action against those responsible for the incident.
Social media piled flak on the channel and called for its closure.
