At a ceremony held at the Emirates Towers Hotel yesterday, the UAE Minister of Health Humaid Al Quttami said, “This announcement proves that the UAE has applied international standards in its health programme by adopting best practices and upgrading strategies according to the WHO standards.”

Speaking to Khaleej Times, the minister, however said that the UAE being declared malaria-free did not mean that there would be no further cases of the disease in the country. “The malaria department will continue to work and we can still expect a few cases in a year that could be imported. Hopefully, from now onwards, there will be no reports of locally borne cases,” he explained.
