UAE commitment to reduce poverty around the world

Abu Dhabi - Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has stressed UAE’s commitment to strengthen the role of regional and international humanitarian organizations in their efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the victims of poverty and hunger around the world.

UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as well as the support from His Highness General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE armed forces, is keen to improve the living conditions of the poor around the world, he added.

He also stressed the need to unify efforts and partnerships between International Red Crescent and the Red Cross to meet the challenges in the humanitarian arena brought about by the economic, social and climatic changes.

In a statement made marking the conclusion of Statutory meetings of the International Red Crescent and Red Cross Movement in the Swiss capital, Geneva, that was participated by a high-level delegation from UAE Red Crescent, Shaikh Hamdan also said that the UAE strongly supports the internationalist approach that seeks to revitalise the human values and standards developed by the United Nations to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

In this context, Shaikh Hamdan emphasised that UAE has fulfilled all its obligations to promote human development efforts in poor countries and regions. He also stressed that the UAE will sustain its policy and approach as a donor of aid in all situations and circumstances and will not give up on human responsibility placed on it.

He called on the international community to fulfill its obligations to humanitarian organizations working to reduce the poverty in the face of rising number of people suffering from starvation in the world, that has exceeded one billion, according to latest statistics documented by the United Nations.

Sheikh Hamdan stressed that to support the capabilities of humanitarian organizations means strengthening of their efforts and living up to its programs as well as helping to develop mechanisms to address the consequences of humanitarian crises and disasters.

The UAE Red Crescent is one of the National Societies which is active and influential on its regional and international levels, and strongly supports the approach of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

It also works to achieve the objectives and principles of international movement through its endeavour to reduce the hardships and vulnerability and to improve life in marginalised areas.

He noted the RCA’s role in promoting solidarity with the humanitarian issues that plague many peoples, and consolidating the values of partnership among various segments of the international movement to confront the humanitarian challenges across the world.
