The Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation has ordered a construction company to compensate a worker with Dh1.5 million after an iron fence from a building under construction fell on him.
The cleaner was on his way to work when the iron fence fell on him, leaving him with multiple injuries. He suffered serious injuries to his thoracic vertebrae and paralysis of the lower limbs, Emarat Al Youm reported.
According to investigations, authorities didn't find any evidence of the accident at the scene. However, the cleaner's co-worker had gone to the scene on the day of the accident and took pictures of the iron fence.
Investigations showed that the fence wasn't built according to the safety standards. The court of First Instance ordered the company to pay the worker Dh3,000 compensation.
The Abu Dhabi Prosecution did not accept the initial verdict and appealed for a 100 per cent disability compensation, in addition to compensating him for permanent life care.
The Court of Appeal accepted the prosecution's requests and imposed a Dh1.5 million fine on the company, including Dh200,000 for each of the seven injuries and Dh100,000 for lifetime care.
The construction company appealed against the ruling but the public prosecution insisted on the victim receiving the compensation money.
The court called on the Ministry of Labour and the Department of Economic Development to stop all transactions of the accused company until the victim gets paid.
