THE HISTORIC BIOPIC HENERAL Luna continues to make history as it has recently been nominated to be the Philippines' official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2016 Oscars. The nomination came soon after the film crossed the 100-million peso mark in theatres.
The movie, directed by Jerrold Tarog, follows the career and death of Antonio Luna, an important figure in the Philippine-American war and one of Philippine history's most prominent figures. Luna is known as one of the most brillant military men in Philippine history, as well as for his quick temper and fierce demeanor.
Heneral Luna has received rave reviews since it was released on September 9, and was praised for its willingness to examine the character more closely, looking at the hero (and those around him) as a man rather than as a legendary figure on a pedestal. Fans of the film have taken to social media to call for an extended run for the movie.
In her review for GMA News Online, Sylvia L. Mayuga called the film "not only a masterpiece but a gift to the nation in another crucial moment of its history."
One of the year's most talked about films not only because of its much-acclaimed cinematography and script but also because it has stirred up debates on Philippine history, Heneral Luna is pegged to be one of the best Philippine made films worthy of a global audience. The film's distributors have yet to officially announce a screening in the UAE, but have revealed plans for a regular run in the UAE and the United States in October/November.
