Kangana Ranaut shook up the industry by slamming Karan Johar, the three reigning Khans of Bollywood on a recent episode of Koffee With Karan.
She reminded Karan that he had made fun of her English at that very show, and how it was those episodes that inspired her to excel. She also spoke about the time when she went to Aditya Chopra's office ten years ago and how rebuked Kangana by telling her secretary that she doesn't have the talent to make it as an actress. Recently, Chopra called her to his office to apologise for making that statement, the actress revealed on the show.
When we spoke to Kangana over the telephone from Mumbai, she sounded satisfied and confident. The actress had, after all, proved all her detractors wrong. So much so that top directors like Johar and Chopra had no option but to bow down to the highly talented Queen. So how did all this happen?
"I think I have been a part of a great journey. People generally look down upon struggle and all kinds of obstacles in their journey. They are looking for instant luck and that's a very immature way of dealing with life. Who I am today is a result of ten years of slogging. Every individual should respect that journey but the sad part is not one talks about their struggles. People only talk about the good side of it. Mine is a rags to riches kind of a story which we don't actually hear in today's day and age," said Kangana as her movie Rangoon releases in the UAE today.
Shahid-Saif not comfortable with Kangana?
It is clear through their joint interviews and war of words that her Rangoon co-star Shahid and Kangana do not share a cordial relationship. Saif has excused himself from most of the promotion of the film. We asked Kangana if it's still tough for a male star to accept that a female star can be bigger than them?
"It definitely is, because we live in a patriarchal kind of a society. Men are anyways raised to believe that they should be the centre of attraction and should be on everyone's priority list, the Raja Beta (prince) culture of our society. That's what they expect all their lives as well. It's not a mindset that they adapt only at the workplace. There is no sense of equality the way they are raised so why just blame them. Even women should be blamed the way mothers treat their sons. It's an unfortunate reality of our society," said Kangana.
'You feel like you can break down any minute'
While Kangana was shooting for Rangoon, she was also embroiled in an ugly legal battle with Hrithik Roshan. How did she manage to stay focused and channel the right energy for her role? "It is hard and difficult because your creativity is literally hanging without strings. You get in a place where you feel like you can break down any minute".
Meditation helped Kangana big time.
"I feel blessed because I have been practising a lot of meditation and I recommend it to all the girls out there. It helps us centre our energy to not get distracted during difficult times and not get swayed and carried away with the sensational news."Box
Let's do some whip lashing
We asked Kangana if it was fun whip lashing wearing the leather costume in the movie?
"It was the most exciting part of the entire process. These things were common in those days but today in contemporary time it's just a dirty little game and a downside of the affair. That's pretty much how it is utilised in Rangoon as well. It's not an action or a revenge film for a woman. She is just dancing with that stuff because she is known as a bold girl. During the 1940s, women did their own actions and people enjoyed watching them bashing men and whiplashing men and running on top of a train."
'Bollywood's beauty Standards are skyrocketing'
Kangana recently said she would be shocked when Vishal Bharadwaj would praise her beauty during the shoot of the movie. We asked her if she was never made to feel beautiful enough in Bollywood?
"Bollywood standards of beauty are skyrocketing. Our actresses are usually supermodels or beauty queens, Miss Universes. I think I am maybe borderline attractive but I don't fall into Bollywood's category of being beautiful. One of my character's power is her beauty. I am happy that my personality and image appealed to Vishal. He thinks that a thinking man can also fall for someone like Julia. He wanted Julia to have that appeal and not in your face - tall, exceptionally beautiful, flawless skin, which is a mainstream definition of beauty," said Kangana.
Is Kangana in love?
Kangana recently revealed that she plans to get married this year. She has not spoken about when and how but she did tell us that she will talk about it soon:
"Being in love is essential for anybody I think. It is important and not just about one person. We can be in love with anyone and life itself. Being in love is the most important thing and it's a fuel for our spirit and soul. We have got to love something, till we are alive. It could just be food, work, a human being but how can one love? What is life without that passion? It can be very, unfortunate. I suggest one should be constantly in love. In my case, I have always been in love. There hasn't been a single day that I haven't been in love. It can get a bit complicated when we are talking about humans. As long as we maintain a balance in that equation, it is definitely advisable. I plan to do that and I will talk about it soon."
My maternal instincts have started to kick in: Kangana Ranaut
When we asked her where does a successful actress like her meet a prospective man considering she is too cool for most of the guys from the industry. She couldn't handle our compliment, "You have already put the complex in my future husband's mind. He would leave me. Let's pretend that I can find someone who is as good as me," Kangana said while laughing.
