Kalaippuli S Thanu surely knows how to do it in style. Just as the hype, hoopla and more of the Rajinikanth-starrer Kabali seemed to have died down, Thanu, the producer of the film, has registered with the Tamil Nadu Film Chamber the title, Kabali Second. Rajinikanth, as always, makes his statement last after all the guess work and comments have been made. So he has not made any official confirmation that he will act in Kabali Second. For now, we do not even know if it is going to be a real sequel to the film directed by Pa Ranjith or if it would take on a new tangent altogether.
Rajinikanth, reportedly, is not in favour of a sequel. He has already committed another film with Pa Ranjith, produced by his son-in-law Dhanush. But more details of that too are under wraps. Rajinikanth was most recently in the news with his tweet extending support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on demonetisation and the fight against black money.
While Kabali had gained mixed reviews, the hype around the movie has worked big time. The film has raked in more than Dhs500crore, is one of India's biggest hits, and has underlined Rajinikanth's undisputed star credentials.
But the challenge now before any director is to take the success to the next level. All eyes now are on 2.0, described as the 'spiritual successor' to the 2010 hit film Enthiran. Directed by Shankar, a true showman, 2.0 has all the frills for a pan-India hit with Akshay Kumar also playing a key role along with Amy Jackson.  But the science-fiction thriller is not really about celebrating Rajinikanth as we know it.
That is why reinventing Rajinikanth, the common man's hero, while satisfying all sections of his loyal fans, isn't easy. Pa Ranjith might have erred in judging the superstar's clout in his effort to demystify the star or he might have achieved the balance, as some pointed out, but the fact remains that capturing the true essence of Rajinikanth will remain as challenging as describing his enigma.
