Visiting inmates in Sharjah jail has been banned as part of Covid-19 precautions, however, families will still be able to get in touch with them through an upgraded e-platform.
"With this alternative remote visiting platform, inmates' families will be able to communicate with them without having to go to the facility," Col Ahmed Abdelaziz Shaheil, director of the Sharjah Punitive and Reformatory Establishments (SPRE), told Khaleej Times.
The move was part of the police's efforts to protect their staff, visitors and inmates from the risks of Covid-19. The concept of e-visits is not new for inmates in Sharjah. In 2017, the visual communication system was launched to allow prisoners to communicate with their families back in their home countries.
