The Sharjah Road and Transport Authority (SRTA) closed Al Jubail Bus Terminal and suspended intercity bus services on Wednesday.
An official at the SRTA said that the closure decision has been taken to ensure the safety and health of employees and commuters.
The authority considers this decision "an appropriate preventive step" to check the rapid spread of coronavirus, he pointed out.
He added that the SRTA has decided to tighten preventative measures as it has been noticed that a lot of people travel between cities during the non-sterilisation period, which impacts the 'stay home' regulation.
The SRTA had earlier closed all air-conditioned bus-stop shelters across the emirates to prevent large gatherings of commuters in one place.
Taxi services will be available during the non-sterilisation period.
The SRTA is continuing to sterilise its fleet of 4,893 taxis and cab drivers are instructed to wear face masks and maintain sterilisers in their cars.
