The 29-year-old, who hit 102 to help England to their only previous victory in the series, survived an lbw call courtesy of the television review when he was on 82 to pick up his third century in one-day internationals.

Australia already have an unsurmountable 4-1 lead in the series and they laboured in the field in front of a sparse crowd on a sweltering day at Sydney Cricket Ground.

England started briskly and kept up the pace after Mitchell Johnson had bowled Marcus Prior off his pads for 18 to bring Trott in to bat.

Trott remained at the crease as his captain Andrew Strauss (63), Kevin Pietersen (29), Ian Bell (45) and Eoin Morgan (21) all made their contributions before he departed caught and bowled by Shaun Tait just before the 50 overs were up.

England’s tally bettered the 320-8 they made against Australia at Edgbaston in 1980. The final match of the series takes place in Perth on Sunday.
