A Dubai expat, who was caught at the airport in possession of cannabi seeds, has been cleared by a court of the charge of possession of drugs.
The public prosecution records show that the 32-year-old resident, an Afghan construction worker, was caught on April 1 by the customs officers at Dubai International Airport in possession of 254.97 grams of the substance that can be grown.
The Court of First Instance acquitted him of the charge of importing and possession of drugs and ordered confiscation of the quantity seized from him. The defendant pleaded not guilty at the court. However, the reason behind the court decision was not immediately available.
Following his arrest, the man was referred to the anti-narcotics division of the Dubai Police.
The quantity of cannabi plants seeds seized from him was examined by the police crime lab. It is among the drugs banned as per the anti-narcotics federal law No. 14 of 1995 and its amendments.
The acquittal ruling remains subject to appeal by the public prosecution.
