The Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Digital Authority have warned residents to beware of scammers who are using a fake Abu Dhabi Police website asking them to pay Dh3,000 to avoid locking of their laptops and computers and shun criminal charges for watching inappropriate stuff online.
The scam has surfaced as most residents are confined to their homes and spending more time surfing the Net than before.
The message on the fake website, dated January 3, says: "Your browser has been blocked due to viewing and dissemination of materials forbidden by law of United Arab Emirates, namely pornography with pedophilia, rape and zoophilia. In order to unlock it, you should pay a Dh3,000 fine with Visa or MasterCard."
Be aware of the latest scam of AD Police fake website targeting users asking them to pay 3000 AED to avoid locking their computer or a case will be transferred to the police force and criminal charges will be pressed against the victim. pic.twitter.com/8xqYnX8gVNIt adds: "Your browser will be unlocked automatically after the fine payment. Attention: In case of non-payment of the fine, or your attempts to unlock the device independently, case materials will be transferred to Dubai Police Force for criminal proceedings against you for committing a crime. You have six hours to pay the fine."
