Dubai Customs has foiled two attempts to smuggle 13kg of narcotics into the country in the first quarter of this year.
Director of Dubai Customs Ahmed Mahboob Musabih said the drugs seized at the Dubai International Airport included 4.4kg of heroin and 8.6kg of cocaine.
"Jebel Ali Customs Center made 35 different seizures, while the Land Customs Center thwarted a marijuana smuggling attempt, among others."
Dubai Customs has skilled and experienced inspection officers and is equipped with the latest inspection devices and technologies, he added. "This helps maintain a very high level of security over borders and entry points."
Official records showed that Dubai Customs busted 1,628 drug smuggling attempts last year.
The Dubai Customs Training Center recently organised several training workshops to hone inspectors' skills in combating smuggling and illegal trade.
Dr Shaikha Al Ghafiri, director of Dubai Customs' Training Centre, said the courses helped the staff inspectors learn about the latest methods to recognise different types of drugs and chemical precursors as well as to combat smuggling.
"Dubai Customs prevents illegal trade and smuggling of drugs and all restricted goods as part of its inherent strategy."
"The centre trains all staff inspectors and enhances their skills with workshops and courses to enable them better to fight smuggling using the latest technologies."
Dubai Customs has also launched the first-of-its-kind Drug Smart Encyclopedia, she pointed out.
"It includes all kinds of drugs illustrated by information, images and videos, with examples of different types of seizures, drug prices and ways to tackle drug trafficking."
