SHARJAH - In a humanitarian move, the Social Committee of Al Thiqa Club for the Handicapped has started delivering its services to the physically challenged people at their homes.
Salem Mohammed Salem, head of the committee told Khaleej Times that Shaikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Director of the Sharjah Medical District and Chairman of Al Thiqa Club for the Handicapped, has initiated and developed the noble project.
"A committee comprising physiotherapists, counsellors and public relation officials was formed to identify the basic requirements of disabled individuals by paying a visit to their homes to determine if they need any medical equipments or other facilities such as wheelchairs and crutches that enable them to move around easily," he said.
Mr Salem explained that the project will fulfil the basic needs of more than 40 handicapped people from various nationalities who are members of the club
"Since the launch of the project, we endeavoured to meet the basic requirements of the members of the club by visiting them twice a week to get daily feedback about their requirements. There are also plans of further expansion and provide humanitarian assistance to handicapped in various emirates."
He added: "Through the project we are trying to lend a supporting hand to the handicapped especially to those who find it difficult to express what they want or what they are suffering from."
Citing an example of the facilities to be introduced at the houses of the physically challenged people, Mr Salem said that a light intercom will be installed in the houses of people suffering from hearing disabilities. "These devices will help them to react immediately to the light from the intercom and perform an action such a opening a door."
The Social Committee of the club is engaged in various charitable and humanitarian activities that aim to bring a smile to the faces of the physically challenged people. The committee assisted various handicapped couples who wished to get married by providing them with financial aid, home furnishings and offering them a monthly income.
Mr Salem revealed that plans are being studied to develop the social committee of the club into a charity organisation that will be affiliated to the club.
