The oncology center uses new technologies in addition to surgical intervention and chemotherapy
Ras Al Khaimah – Shaikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah has initiated its first of its kind and only radiotherapy unit in the northern emirates as of this June.
Dr Myung-Whun Sung, CEO and Chair of Oncology Center said the hospital has so far received seven cancer patients who will get multidisciplinary treatment, an advanced radiation therapy and medical oncology as well. “Especially radiation oncology provides high quality medical services by top-notch medical team”.
The oncology center uses new technologies in addition to surgical intervention and chemotherapy, he added. “Radiation therapy provides sophisticated treatment to target the cancer tumor and protect the parts of the body at the same time.”
Dr BoKyong Kim, oncology radiology consultant at the hospital, said they plan to upgrade or exchange the RT machines soon. “This will help get more accurate positioning of patients whereas targeting tumors will be easier.”
The modification of the radiotherapy plan during the treatment course is also easily possible to reduce the treated related complications, he noted.
Dr Kim stated that the unit includes two linear accelerators and one big bore CT simulator. “The department also provides sophisticated radiotherapy including 3D conformal radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy and IMRT.”
Shaikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital radiation oncology department is the first and only facility which treats radiotherapy in the northern emirates, he said.
“It is noted that the number of oncology patients who visited the hospital in the past six months reached 878 patients whereas 102 were admitted to the hospital since its initial opening last December.”
