4 tips to keep in mind when buying shoes for little ones

Do you know you need to replace your child's shoes every few months?

The world of proper footwear can be complicated enough to trip up an adult. Here are some pointers to keep in mind when buying shoes for developing feet, like those of toddlers and children:

1. Measure the feet every time you buy shoes

The best way to do that is to remove the insole of the shoe and let the child stand on it. There should be a finger's space between the toes and the end of the insole - about 12mm to 17mm.

2. Never be content to simply trust a certain size-code

Children's feet can be quite insensitive to pain. This means that children do not realise their shoes are too small, even when it's so small it starts to negatively impact the healthy development of feet. There are big differences between the inside-length of shoes of different brands, so always do the measurement test to ensure they have enough 'wiggle room' in their shoes.

3. Do regular checks

Children's feet grow about 1mm per month; in elementary school, it can even be a little more. That means that you have to check regularly if the shoes still have a good fit and enough room. There are several studies that confirm that, in a typical elementary class, only 30 per cent of the children wear shoes that are the right size! Shoes that are too small are harmful for the feet of children. The healthy development gets encumbered and it can result in deformation of the feet, such as the position of the large toe.

4. Change their shoes regularly

Check children's shoes every 3-4 months and replace if they do not fit any longer. If you see certain abnormal or strongly uneven abrasion, have your child checked by an orthopedist. Also, feet sweat a lot, so having another pair on hand can help your kids maintain proper hygiene. If their shoes are made of leather, be aware that they need time to dry so allow them to rest 24 hours before wearing again.
