“The four per cent rise in numbers translated into 4.7 million guest nights and Dh4.3 billion in hotel revenues,” said Shaikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA).

While addressing the annual summit of American Business Group in the capital on Saturday, he said that growth was limited by emirate’s existing hotel room capacity of 13,000.

He said more than 3,000 additional rooms will be available ahead of final round of the Formula One 2009 season in November.

The chairman said Abu Dhabi remains confident of achieving hotel guest arrivals in 2010 through 2012, despite the challenging times for the international tourism industry.

“We hope to secure demand by encouraging visitors from new markets — such as China, Russia and Australia — by aggressively competing for business tourism,” he said.

Shaikh Sultan said that the ADTA will soon chalk out a stakeholder engagement programme aimed at adopting a unified, and coordinated approach to destination development.

He said the “Partners In Progress” campaign would be a tangible demonstration of the authority’s commitment to partnering stakeholders. “Development of the destination cannot rely on the authority alone,” he said.

He said huge public and private sector investment in infrastructure would support the tourism industry in the emirate.
