Al Ain Int’l Airport’s Expansion Plan Reaches Advanced Stage
DUBAI — Al Ain International Airport, or AAIA, located 18 kilometres northwest of Al Ain, has put all efforts into catering to the needs of its growing traffic, with an expansion programme already at an advanced stage of planning.
Originally built to serve 1,000 passengers per peak hour, the airport has subsequently undergone developments that included the expansion of the main terminal building to handle more flights, the opening of a new cargo terminal, and the installation of a catering building.
Abu Dhabi Airport Company, or ADAC, manages AAIA. The company also operates four other airports — Abu Dhabi International Airport, Al Bateen Executive Airport, Sir Bani Yas Island Airport, and Delma Island Airport.
Although the airport in Al Ain is smaller than the Abu Dhabi International Airport, it will rank amongst the most modern airports in the region when the improvement programme
is completed.
Abu Dhabi Airport recorded a significant growth in passenger traffic in 2008 as it jumped by 30.02 per cent to 9.02 million compared, to 6.9 million passengers in 2007. Eight airlines currently operate out of Al Ain International Airport, including, Royal Jordanian, Brittania Airways, Air India Express, Thomson Fly, Pakistan International Airlines, Egypt Air, Sudan Air and Shaheen Air and other non-scheduled airlines and freighters. In addition, Midex Airlines has chosen Al Ain International Airport as the main hub for its cargo business.
