The Al Maya Group also intends to extend its wholesale business in the Sultanate, paving the way for direct imports of fresh vegetables and fruits from the United States and Britain for the first time to the country. Both moves, a key official of the company said here, were in response to the Œcontinued strength of the Omani economy’.
The 27-year-old group currently operates 22 supermarkets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Al Ain. A new store, at Dubai Marina, will start functioning in the second half of this year. The company launched its first store in Oman at Wadi Kabir at the end of March and the second in Ghubrah last week, both densely populated residential and commercial areas in the Muscat governorate. Three more outlets will be opened this year, all in the capital, taking the group’s total investment in the Sultanate to more than RO1 million, Kamal Vachani, Director, told Khaleej Times. “Oman is a very strong and steady market. We will be expanding here in a big way,” he added.
