Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced a more affordable version of its flagship Galaxy S device, bringing back a strategy that would appeal not only to fans of its brand, but also to fans of budget-friendly yet high-specced devices.
The Galaxy S20 FE - Fan Edition - comes at a lower price but remains a premium flagship smartphone as a number of specifications used on the higher-end S20 series devices have been incorporated.
And this isn't the first time Samsung has used the FE convention: It was first used to re-release a device based on the Galaxy Note7 back in 2016.
The FE devices have been well-received, and has helped more consumers get on board with the most popular brand in Samsung's vast range of smartphones.
Among those features on the The Android 10-powered 5G device are the latest Snapdragon 865 chip, quick connectivity, an AI-powered camera and a 6.5-inch Super Amoled display with 'super-smooth' scrolling and a 120Hz refresh rate, among others. It is also IP68-rated.
Its triple-camera system has 12MP ultra-wide, 12MP wide and 8MP telephoto lenses, plus the Space Zoom that debuted in the original S20 line-up earlier this year, giving zoom capabilities of 3x and up to 30x for optical and super resolution, respectively. Its front camera clocks in at 32MP.
Battery, meanwhile, is at 4500mAh that guarantees all-day life. It also has Samsung's super-fast charging and Wireless PowerShare technologies.
"We are constantly speaking to our fans and taking feedback, and we heard what they loved the most about our Galaxy S20 series, what features they used most often and what they would want to see in a new smartphone," said Dr T.M. Roh, president and head of Samsung Electronics' mobile communications business.
"The Galaxy S20 FE is an extension of Galaxy S20 family, designed to bring meaningful innovation to even more people and give them a chance to do the things they love with the best of Galaxy."
The 4G version is priced at Dh2,499, while the 5G model is at Dh2,699. Pre-ordering customers will receive complementary Galaxy Buds+ worth Dh529. For perspective, the entry-level Galaxy S20 cost Dh3,199.
