The Zayed Future Energy Prize – which was launched in January 2008 at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi to honour the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – recognizes individuals, companies or organizations that have demonstrated innovation and leadership in their contributions to the global response to the future of energy.

“We recognize that innovation will be a driving force to bring us closer to the widespread adoption of renewable energy. The Zayed Future Energy Prize aims to inspire this kind of innovation and honour contributions that help us solve our global energy challenges,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Director General of the Zayed Future Energy Prize.

The winner of the 2009 Zayed Future Energy Prize will be announced in Abu Dhabi on January, 19th, 2010.

The winner will receive $1.5 million (USD) to take their ideas and ambitions forward. Last year’s winner, Mr. Dipal Chandra Barua, Founding Managing Director of Grameen Shakti, has had international recognition and has used the prize to set up a scholarship program through his organization in Bangladesh. He is training rural women to be solar technicians and enabling green entrepreneurs through a highly successful microcredit program.

“Winning the 2009 Zayed Future Energy Prize has been a great honor, and we have worked hard to ensure that this honor has been passed on to the people of Bangladesh who have demonstrated incredible ambition and innovation in adopting clean, renewable technologies to solve their daily energy challenges in the rural areas,” said Mr. Barua.

“The support we have received from the prize will help support this essential work for generations to come.”

2009 candidate entries will be judged upon the key criteria of innovation, long-term vision and leadership. Innovation: presentation of cutting-edge concepts and solutions that solve today’s energy and sustainability challenges; Long-term vision: demonstration of ability to scale through a commercially viable or sustainable business model; and, Leadership: championing the vision in order to advance clean energy and sustainable solutions.
