Nivea sets up first Indian plant in Gujarat

Global skin and body care brand Nivea is setting up its first manufacturing plant in India at Sanand near Ahmedabad, the sixth major FMCG brand to make a beeline to the industrial cluster which has become an auto hub.

The Rs10 billion, 70,000-square-metre greenfield plant which will be ready by March next year will also house Nivea’s first ever R&D centre in the Saarc region to innovate products specially suited for Indian skin types.

According to Rakshit Hargave, managing director of Nivea India Pvt Ltd, an affiliate of German cosmetic major Beiersdorf, the new unit for which ground-breaking ceremony was held on Monday, will have a capacity to produce about 50-70 million units of our 60-odd products, including Nivea creme, body lotion, shower gel, deodorants and other products.

He told Khaleej Times that Sanand was chosen for Nivea’s first plant in India as it was close to large consumer markets, adding that once operational, the Sanand units would cut the imports of Nivea by 50-60 per cent.Nivea is the sixth major FMCG brand to set up base at Sanand.
