Ajman - The smart metre mechanism would help track all private taxis operating in Ajman.
The Ajman Public Transportation Authority (APTA) has launched a smart metre system for private taxis in the northern emirate. The device has optical sensors, monitors speed of private taxis, has updated maps, and also enables simpler payment and safety mechanisms for passengers.
Omar Muhammad Lootah, Executive Director, Operations, APTA, said the authorities were keen to upgrade private taxi services by adopting smart applications and going hi-tech. The initiatives were in sync with Ajman’s bid to accelerate its digital transformation drive.
The APTA has launched a massive infrastructure development in the transport sector.
The smart metre mechanism would help track all private taxis operating in Ajman, Lootah said.
Also, the digital transformation drive contributed to the abolition of cash payments and further enhanced the use of Masar – accepted in public transport in Ajman – credit and debit cards in the emirate, he added.
A passenger also gets a message on his/her mobile phone of transaction detail after a ride is completed.
Besides, the device has made it easier for APTA’s control centre to keep in touch with private taxi drivers and the mechanism comes in handy during any emergency.
Lootah cited several inherent advantages of the mechanism such as collecting data on private taxis and drivers, displaying active and cancelled trips etc.
“Also, the lost and found items can be easily tracked,” he added.
