Dubai Tram will start passenger service as of Wednesday, November 12. The tram timings on weekdays (Saturday to Thursday) are from 6.30am to 1.30am (of the following day). On weekends (Friday), the tram will start service at 9am and continue up to 1.30am (of the following day).
Trams will appear in each of the 11 stations at a 10-minute interval per station (during peak timings); while a 12-minute interval will be followed during off-peak time.
Abdulla Yousef Al Ali, CEO of RTA Rail Agency, said: “The Dubai Tram constitutes a paradigm shift in the quality of mass transit means in the Emirate of Dubai as it contributes to easing the daily travels of community members side by side other public transport means in operation such as the Metro and public buses.
“Fixing the tram service hours was geared towards meeting the needs of the public and responding to their daily transit patterns, particularly as the tram serves densely populated areas, offering commuter service from and to places of work, besides serving as a tourist attraction in the Emirate. The tram thus appeals to a whole host of community segments.
“Each tram has a capacity to accommodate up to 405 riders in seven carriages comprising Gold, Women and Children, and Silver cabins. The stations served by the tram are: JBR 1, JBR 2, JLT, Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai Marina, Marina Towers, Mina Siyahi, Dubai Media City, the Palm Jumeirah, Knowledge Village, and Sufouh. Footbridges have been constructed to link Dubai Tram and Dubai Metro at two stations namely Damac Properties and JLT. The Tramway also intersects with the monorail of the Palm Jumeirah at the entrance of the Palm, Sufouh Street where a multi-level parking lot is in place at this station to serve tram and monorail users.”
Fare structure
Speaking about the means of payment on the tram, Al Ali said the fares will increase depending on the zones covered. The geographical area of the city is divided into seven zones, he said. “The Nol card is the only fare payment means and there are three fare tiers covering fares of transiting within the seven public transit zones. The first tier covers traveling over one or two zones, provided the distance covered is not more than 3km and the fare is fixed at Dh3 for a single trip.
“The second tier covers travelling over two zones at a fare fixed at Dh5, and the third tier covers travelling across all zones and the fare is fixed at Dh7.5 per single trip.
“The RTA is keen on realising its vision of providing ‘Safe and Smooth Transport for All’, and its third goal of bringing happiness to people; which features prominently in the thinking and drive advocated by our prudent leaders,” said Al Ali.
