Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Acting Director of the department, said police patrols spotted these groups and were able to arrest a large number of them and impounded 44 quad bikes and motorcycles.

The police also registered cases against some who committed traffic law violations and two who tried to attack the policemen on duty.On July 31, a police patrol team spotted a quad bike causing chaos and endangering road users in Al Qusais 3. The patrols followed the rider and when the police tried to impound the bike, they were threatened by the rider and a man with a knife.

However, reinforcements arrived soon and the cops arrested the man who brandished the knife. The rider who escaped was tracked down and arrested later. The police found he was in the wanted list. Another group, which called themselves ‘Ghosts’, was also arrested for causing chaos in Al Mamzar and on other roads. The group targeted and intercepted vehicles driven by women and made risky U-turns with their motorcycles in front of policemen.

Col Al Mazroui said cops gathered information about the gang and its leader. It was learnt that the group came to Al Mamzar at a certain time every night.

The police patrols spotted the gang entering Al Mamzar driving dangerously in front of a police patrol team. The gang leader challenged the policemen with a hand gesture, without realising that the cops had put him and the other riders under surveillance.

He said that the group leader rode his motorcycle from Al Mamzar towards the Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and tried to ram his vehicle on a civilian patrol vehicle when he realised that it belonged to the police. Then he returned to Al Mamzar area, continued to lead the other youths riding motorcycles dangerously, putting safety of other road users also in risk.

The police patrols tried to corner the gang leader at a crossroad but he tried to flee towards Sharjah after jumping a railing but was intercepted and arrested.

Col Al Mazroui said the gang leader had been noticed endangering the safety of people on roads several times earlier.
