The shot, called Tetavax, is a tetanus injection which is almost immediately administered to all patients who have had an accident or have been injured badly.
People with wounds, cuts or burns can be prone to tetanus especially if it is a puncture-type wound or if they were in contact with soil or manure likely to harbour tetanus organisms.
A failure to have the anti-tetanus shot on time may lead to the disease called tetanus or lockjaw which causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body.
The symptoms include "locking" of the jaw, so the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow anything. Tetanus leads to death in about one out of 10 cases, according to information provided by the World Health Organisation.
Mohammed Yousaf hurt himself and when he went to a clinic for a tetanus shot, he was told by the staff that the drug was in short supply and therefore he was not administered the shot.
"This is a vital drug and should be available in all clinics and hospitals all over the emirate. I came back without getting the basic treatment, i.e. a tetanus shot," said Yousaf.
A representative of the clinic said that there was a shortage of the tetanus injection across Dubai.
"This is an affordable injection which is given as a preventive. We have already placed an order with the suppliers a month ago, but the supply has been erratic for the past one year," he said. Most clinics charge Dh15 for the shot.
New Medical Centre, the sole suppliers/distributors of the injection across the emirate, said the supply of the drug was erratic because of a change in the packaging.
BR Shetty, CEO of NMC, said, "The drug has been in short supply because of a change in the packaging, but hopefully the supply will be restored as soon as the problem is solved."
